How to Measure a Toilet for Replacement

Toilets can last for decades if they’re properly installed and well maintained. However, they don’t last forever. You’ll have to replace your toilet at some point. When it’s time for a toilet replacement, it’s essential to get a few key measurements right.

How to Measure a Toilet for Replacement

In this guide, we’ll look at the key measurements you need to get right when replacing your toilet.

Tank Height

The height of the toilet tank is an important measurement that you need to get right when replacing your toilet. The tank height determines how much clearance the toilet requires between the tank and any objects or structures above it, such as bathroom shelves, cabinets, or windowsills. The appropriate tank height will ensure that the toilet fits comfortably within your bathroom space without any obstructions. To get the correct tank height, take a tape measure and measure from the floor to the top of your tank. If you’re unsure about the appropriate tank height, consider consulting with a professional plumber that specializes in toilet installation. They can perform a comprehensive inspection and provide expert insights based on your space and needs.

Tank Width

If you're replacing the entire toilet, measure the width of the tank at its widest point. Ensure that the new toilet's tank will fit within the available space.

Toilet Depth

Toilets come in various bowl styles, such as elongated (also called oval) or round. Elongated toilet bowls provide more seating space, making them more comfortable for most people, especially during longer periods of use. On the other hand, round toilet bowls are generally more compact than elongated bowls. This makes them an ideal choice for smaller bathrooms or spaces where maximizing floor space is essential. Measure the distance from the bolts at the base of the toilet to the front of the bowl. This measurement determines whether you need an elongated or round toilet bowl to fit comfortably in your bathroom space.

Rough-In Dimensions

The rough-in distance is the measurement from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the sewer drain or the bolts that secure the toilet to the floor. This is the most critical measurement for a replacement toilet. The most common rough-in distances are 10, 12, and 14 inches. Take your tape measure and measure from the finished wall to the center of the waste pipe. Double-check this distance carefully to ensure the new toilet will align with your existing plumbing setup.

DIY Toilet Replacement or Hire A Licensed Plumber?

While some DIYers can successfully install their own toilets, it’s important that you assess your skillset before taking on such a project. Improper toilet installation can lead to all sorts of problems, including toilet leaks, water damage, unstable toilet, poor flushing, and many more. If you don’t have the skillset to get the job done correctly, it’s advisable to leave the job to a trusted plumbing service.
