How to Plunge a Toilet Like a Pro

Clogged toilets are not a savory topic, but we have to face it because it’s a reality of homeownership. Most of the time, toilets clog because we treat them as trash cans, flushing everything from dental floss to wet wipes and paper towels. Luckily, you can clear toilet clogs using simple DIY techniques such as plunging or snaking. However, severe clogs need professional intervention from a professional plumbing service.

How to Plunge a Toilet Like a Pro

In this guide, Mr. Rooter Plumbing explains how to plunge a toilet the right way. If you’ve been experiencing toilet clogs, read on to learn how to effectively clear them with a plunger.

Step 1: Grab a Toilet Plunger

A toilet plunger, also known as a flange plunger, has a cup-shaped head attached to a handle, typically made of rubber or plastic. Most people use a cup plunger instead of a flange plunger to clear clogged toilets, which is why they often struggle to clear stubborn clogs. Make sure you use the right plunger for better chances of success. Once you have the right plunger, ensure there’s enough water in the toilet bowl to cover the plunger’s rubber cup. If not, add some water.

Step 2: Position the Plunger

Place the plunger over the toilet drain hole at a 45-degree angle. This positioning is important to create a seal between the plunger and the drain hole. You need to get this step right because a good seal is essential for effective plunging. If the seal is broken, there won’t be sufficient suction for clog removal.

Step 3: Create Suction

Once you’ve created a tight seal, push down forcefully and then pull up gently. Gradually increase the speed and force of your plunges. Be careful not to break the seal as you plunge; otherwise, you’ll have to start over again. The force you’ll create with the vigorous plunges may dislodge the clog and allow water to drain freely. If the clog persists, repeat the process several times.

Step 4: Check for Drainage

If the water drains away, you’ve successfully cleared the clog, and the toilet should flush normally. Flush the toilet to see if it’s working properly. If not, call a professional plumber to help you clear the clog.

How to Prevent Clogged Toilets

  • Be careful about what you flush down your toilet—things like condoms, feminine hygiene products, flushable wipes, medications, and cotton swabs do not belong in the toilet. Dispose of them in the trash can.
  • Schedule a professional toilet inspection with a skilled plumber at least once a year. An inspection will help you identify minor issues before they turn into costly repairs.
  • Install a water softener to remove mineral ions that may build up on toilet drain lines and cause clogs.
  • If you have a low-flow toilet, consider upgrading to a high-efficiency model. Call a professional plumber specializing in toilet installation to help with installing a new toilet.
